Response to letter written to Ambrose Bierce by Ella Sterling Mighels. She had written to Bierce to assure him that he had not insulted her when he wrote to the San Francisco Examiner to respond to a recent attack on his literary reputation. Bierce addresses the tone of the rhetorical question that he posed to the writers named in the Examiner article. Bierce also recognizes the need to be careful in his writing to avoid being misunderstood.

Ambrose Bierce was born in Horse Cave Creek, Ohio, on June 24, 1842. After military service in the Civil War, he settled in San Francisco, where he met Mark Twain and became a columnist and writer. Bierce became known for his sharp, sarcastic wit while writing for the "Argonaut," the "Wasp," and the "San Francisco Examiner."
